Why You Shouldn't Give Up on Your 401(k) | Avid Investor Group

Between turbulent financial markets, high fees, and a lack of employer support, many workers are just about ready to give up on their 401(k) retirement plans. But even though many of the criticisms of employer-sponsored retirement plans are valid, you can still navigate the twists and turns of the 401(k) world to make great use of the plans to help you retire comfortably and securely.

Why everyone hates 401(k)s
Plenty of hawkers of financial advice ? myself included ? dwell at length about the value of 401(k) plans. They let you set aside relatively huge amounts of money ? $17,000 in 2012 ? and give many people the largest tax deduction they?ll get on an annual basis, saving thousands in current income taxes. Used correctly, they also impose discipline on savers, locking away money to devote toward the single purpose of saving for retirement.

But while the theory behind 401(k) plans is solid, what happens in practice often falls short of the ideal. Consider some of the black marks against 401(k)s:

  • To many, the very existence of the 401(k) plan is an affront to the notion that employers should directly provide for their workers? retirements through traditional pension plans. Yet this year, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC??) and General Motors (NYSE: GM??) have joined the dozens of employers that have frozen at least some of their workers? pension plans in recent years, instead shunting workers toward 401(k) plans.
  • Typically, a company that moves from a traditional pension to a 401(k) plan will make additional employer contributions toward workers? retirement. Yet during the recession, Ford (NYSE: F??) and FedEx (NYSE: FDX??) were just two of the many companies that suspended employer matching contributions. Although they?ve since restored their matching, the episode shows that workers can?t count on employers to stand by them in tough times.
  • 401(k) plans lock workers into a fixed slate of investment options. If employers choose wisely, they may give workers access to strong low-cost investments. But all too often, employers pick investments with high fees in order to minimize their own administrative costs, which can lead to workers paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra costs over their careers.
  • Given how often people switch jobs, 401(k) plans present a challenge in that they?re tied to a particular employer. Although you can transfer 401(k)s to a new employer or to a retirement account of your own, it introduces an additional hassle. Moreover, with some employer contributions requiring you to stay at a job for a certain minimum period, many workers end up forfeiting those employer contributions when they switch jobs too soon.

With all these downsides, it?s a wonder why anyone uses 401(k) plans. But with some work, it can still be worth it to save in an employer-sponsored plan.

Be smart with your retirement
The key to making the most of your 401(k) is to find its strengths. Most 401(k)s have a combination of high-fee actively managed funds and low-cost index funds. If you stick with the low-cost alternatives, you?ll generally do better over the long haul.

In addition, don?t look at switching jobs as a hassle but rather as an opportunity. Whenever you switch jobs, you can take 401(k) money and roll it into an IRA that you have complete control over. The rollover lets you pick nearly any investment you want, so even if you?re stuck in a high-fee 401(k), you can then save a bundle by moving your money into your IRA and choosing better investments of your own.

Finally, pay at least minimal attention to vesting rules for employer contributions. I?m not saying you should stay at a job you hate for an extra couple of years in order to keep a few thousand dollars of matches. But if it?s a matter of sticking it out for a month or two, it may be worth the effort.

Don?t give up
401(k)s deserve the criticism they?ve gotten, but that doesn?t mean you should give up on them. Used correctly, 401(k)s can still play an incredibly valuable role in helping you retire rich in the long run.

In Alabama, strict immigration law sows discord

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Reuters) - Alabama tomato farmer Darryl Copeland looked out over his seedlings and fretted about this year's harvest.

He was afraid his seasonal migrant workforce might not return for the summer picking season, opting to stay away rather than risk running afoul of Alabama's stringent immigration law. The crew he awaits is picking the Florida harvest.

"I had to cut back my planting not knowing if the labor is going to be available," said Copeland, 47, who planted just two-thirds of his 30 acres on the far side of Straight Mountain in northeastern Blount County.

"I don't know what we're going to do if they run every illegal out of here. It's going to be hard to stay in business."

Fellow Blount County tomato farmer Tim Battles planted just 12 of his 25 acres because of uncertainties engendered by the law.

"I've got $160,000, $170,000 in my crop," he said. "Let's say (immigration enforcement officers) come in July and haul everyone off. I lose it all. What they're doing down in Montgomery (the state capital) is governing us out of a job."

Modeled after Arizona's controversial 2010 immigration law, Alabama's statute and others also passed last year - in Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah - require state and local law enforcement officers to verify the immigration status of those they suspect of being in the country illegally.

Now, Alabama is finding out whether it can live without undocumented immigrants, estimated to number 120,000 in 2010, who flocked to this southern state only in recent decades. They've been working in border states for several generations.

More states are considering their own laws but first want to see how the U.S. Supreme Court rules on provisions of the Arizona law, a judgment expected before the end of June. Based on questions posed by justices during oral arguments heard on April 25, some analysts expect the Roberts court to uphold much of the Arizona law, potentially inviting other states to follow.

A federal appeals court has said it will await the Supreme Court's Arizona ruling before deciding whether to strike down any aspects of the Alabama law, also known as House Bill 56.

Alabama's law requires state officials to be more vigilant about suspected illegal immigrants, denying them public services. Approved last June by the Republican-held legislature and signed by Republican Governor Robert Bentley, the law took effect in September, though sections were put on hold by the federal courts.

"Without question, Alabama's H.B. 56 is the most comprehensive anti-illegal immigration state law ever drafted," said Kris Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state and intellectual author of both the Arizona and Alabama laws, who has consulted with 10 other states on immigration legislation. "It includes just about everything a state can do to discourage illegal immigration."

Kobach, an informal adviser to presumed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, is a proponent of "self-deportation," creating conditions so unwelcome that undocumented immigrants leave voluntarily.

By that measure the Alabama law has succeeded, driving tens of thousands of illegal immigrants from the state, according to data gleaned from labor surveys and supported anecdotally by employers, politicians and immigrants themselves.

At the same time, employers have so far escaped sanctions. One section assigns escalating penalties for employers caught hiring undocumented workers, ranging from a three-year probation for the offending company to a permanent suspension of all business licenses in the state. Officials report virtually no instances where such sanctions have been enforced.

"This law is scapegoating the vulnerable population. Cracking down on those people is a lot easier than going after businesses," said Mary Bauer, legal director for the Southern Poverty Law Center. "I don't see how we can see it as anything other than a civil rights crisis."

WHAT AFFECTED WORKERS SAY

At Gordo's Market in a Birmingham strip mall, Mexican day laborers tell of compatriots who fled after the law was approved, either to another U.S. state or back to Mexico.

"Those with families left," said Abel Trevino, 30, from San Luis Potosi. "They were afraid they were going to get deported and split up."

Proponents of the law boast that with U.S. citizens and legal immigrants taking jobs vacated by illegal immigrants, Alabama's unemployment rate fell from 9.3 percent in June when the bill passed to 7.2 percent in April. That compares with national figures of 9.3 percent and 7.7 percent, respectively, with Alabama outperforming the national rate by a full percentage point or more in January, February and March.

Not everyone agrees the law has helped employment.

"The fall in the unemployment rate is merely because of the shrinking labor force and not because this law helped anything," said Samuel Addy, a University of Alabama economist. A cost-benefit analysis he published in January said the law could cost the state between $2.3 billion and $10.8 billion in annual gross domestic product, based on estimates that between 40,000 and 80,000 undocumented workers would flee.

"Most immigration researchers find a net (economic) benefit as a whole for the nation" when migrants are allowed to work, Addy said.

Each immigrant represents an additional consumer. Some experts, however, say illegal immigrants, just like low-earning U.S. citizens, are a net drain on public finances, largely from the cost of educating their children.

Immigration from Mexico has slowed since the U.S. economy fell into recession at the end of 2007. The estimated population of unauthorized Mexicans living in the United States dropped from 7 million in 2007 to 6.1 million in 2011, said Jeffrey Passel, a senior demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center.

From 2005 to 2010, he said, as many Mexicans returned home as came to the United States.

"Part of what people are responding to in states like Alabama, Georgia and Arizona is the rapid growth of the undocumented population from the late '90s to 2007, but by the time the response occurred the phenomenon seems to have been over," Passel said.

HELP WANTED

Albertville, Alabama, is home to 25,000 people and half a dozen chicken-processing plants that drew undocumented immigrants to low-wage jobs. The plants run three shifts a day: two to process the chickens and one to clean up after the slaughter.

Once the law passed, illegal workers left the Alabama poultry industry, and U.S. citizens filled those jobs.

As one consequence, Albertville's sales tax revenue increased 9.3 percent from October to April, an increase Mayor Lindsey Lyons attributed to citizens taking those jobs and spending their money locally rather than sending it over the border.

Poultry titan Tyson Foods Inc said it believed its northern Alabama operations were unaffected. "Our company already uses all available tools provided by the U.S. government to verify the documents of the people we hire," the company said in a statement.

Georgia-based Wayne Farms LLC said it had to replace about 130 of the 900 employees at its Albertville plant.

"We can't say for sure that was because of the Alabama law, but the inference certainly was there that we can assume the people left because of their concern about the law," said Wayne Farms spokesman Frank Singleton. "It definitely had a chilling effect on the migrant community."

To attract the new employees, Wayne Farms offered "a little above the prevailing minimum wage" of $7.25 an hour, Singleton said.

"When Wayne Farms had a job fair not long after the bill was signed, there were 250 people standing in line," Lyons said. "The poultry industry has hired a lot more whites and blacks that are glad to have the work."

RESPONDING TO CRITICS

Some, citing Alabama's racist past, see in the Alabama law evidence of bigotry, an argument Governor Robert Bentley rejected.

"As Christians, we are taught to obey the law. There is nothing unkind or unjust about asking people to obey the law," Bentley said in an email to Reuters.

"What took place in the civil rights era was a series of unlawful actions against lawful residents. It was a shameful chapter in our state's history. The immigration issue of today is entirely different. The government is not persecuting people."

Bentley supported removing a section of the law that has been temporarily blocked by the courts: one requiring schools to determine whether students and their parents are legal residents.

Lawmakers led by the main sponsor of H.B. 56, state Senator Scott Beason, voted on May 18 to preserve that provision and added one requiring law enforcement to publish online the photographs and any criminal charges against undocumented immigrants brought to court.

Fifty-four percent of Alabama voters approved of the law compared with 35 percent opposed, according to a February poll by Anzalone Liszt Research.

"We're not talking about a hard-hearted policy," Beason told Reuters in his legislative office in Montgomery. "It's a trespassing issue. Federal law, properly enforced, would be sufficient. If we close the border and enforce the law, states wouldn't have to pass these kinds of laws. It's an issue nationally, and Alabama just had the courage to deal with it."

Farmers simply shake their heads.

Jerry Spencer is founder and chief executive of Grow Alabama, a farm advocacy group that also runs a for-profit business helping farmers market their crops. When farmers complained the law left them short of labor, he spent $3,000 of his own money, he said, on a 30-day experiment to take unemployed workers from Birmingham to tomato farms an hour away.

"It was pretty disastrous. The people that we took were not prepared for the level of arduous work involved. And the farmers were not prepared to teach them what to do," Spencer said.

In a state where one in five jobs is supported by agriculture, other farming advocates seek greater access to seasonal workers on temporary visas, saying the current system is too costly for all but the largest farms, requiring the employer to provide transportation and housing.

"Over the last two generations (of Americans), we just don't have anybody that can do that work, that backbreaking work," said Brett Hall, Alabama's deputy agriculture commissioner.

NOT JUST FARM LABOR

Building contractors, among others who have long depended on undocumented workers, complain the law has also had the effect of driving out legal employees. Families and work crews tend to stick together, so if one or two lack papers, the entire group leaves together.

"My counterparts around the country are saying, ?thanks for sending workers our way,'" said Henry Hagood, chief executive of AGC Alabama, an association of contractors.

"The Republicans took over the Senate and the House, our so-called friends," Hagood said. "From a business point of view, it's a terrible piece of legislation. It's just mean-spirited."

Across Alabama's border to the west, Mississippi considered its own immigration law. The bill passed the state House this spring but died in a Senate committee.

"We saw what was happening in Alabama," said Mississippi state Representative Preston Sullivan, chairman of the state Agriculture Committee, "and we didn't want that happening here."

NASA: SpaceX docking ranks near top of space-age 'firsts' (+video)

The successful docking of the SpaceX Dragon capsule with the International Space Station Friday is a landmark moment in opening space to wider use, NASA officials say.

The first commercially operated cargo ship destined for the International Space Station entered the record books Friday when the station's crew confirmed that SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft was securely docked to the orbiting outpost.

Dragon cleared its first major hurdle of the day Friday when station flight engineer Don Petitt, the mission's grappler-in-chief, captured the Dragon capsule with the station's robotic arm as the craft free-floated some 30 feet from the docking port.

?Houston? Station. Looks like we've got us a dragon by the tail,? Dr. Petitt said as NASA's mission control confirmed that the arm's grip was solid.

Without skipping a beat, he deadpanned, ?We're thinking this sim[ulation] went really well. We're ready to turn it around and do it for real,? as applause and hugs broke out in two control rooms ? NASA's and SpaceX's at the company's Hawthorne, Calif., headquarters.

Until its conclusion on May 31, the mission remains a test flight ? combining into one mission the objectives initially planned for two launches this year. But its?success so far signals that a company NASA has helped nurture can perform the difficult feat of lofting a craft capable of catching up with another spacecraft traveling at faster-than-bullet speeds, matching its pace, and safely docking with it ? something no other privately-operated spacecraft has done.

Indeed, Dragon was not merely carrying a demonstration payload of roughly 1,000 pounds of food, clothing, and other items to the space station. It was carrying the hopes of a US commercial spaceflight industry aiming to build a thriving space-transportation sector in much the same way fledgling air carriers emerged during the early decades of the 20th Century to build a thriving commercial air-transportation industry.

Over the years, NASA officials have spoken of the ?firsts? the US space program has accomplished, said Michael Suffredini, space-station program manager at NASA, at a news briefing Friday afternoon.

?This rates right at the top,? he said of the partnership between NASA and SpaceX. NASA established requirements SpaceX had to meet operating near the space station. Beyond those requirements, he said, ?a contractor relatively independent of NASA designed on its own a spacecraft, [then] completely built and tested and flew this spacecraft in a manner that has been remarkable.?

A space-station workout

The rendezvous and docking Friday gave participating space-station crew members a workout.

Although the process of grappling and berthing may look fairly simple, it isn't, notes astronaut Catherine Coleman, who grappled Japan's cargo craft, known by its acronym HTV, on its second supply mission to the station in January 2011. She likens it to trying to pass something from one car to another ? when both are traveling at interstate speeds.

On orbit, it's a Grey Poupon moment at 17,500 miles an hour.

?This is truly a momentous accomplishment for SpaceX and for the industry,? said former astronaut and space-station commander Michael Lopez-Alegria, now president of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation in Washington, in a prepared statement.

Anthrax vaccine - To the victor, the spoils

In my last post, we began to play ?Follow the Money? to better understand the history of the anthrax vaccine and the current proposal to test the vaccine on children.

Conflicts of Interest-Case Study

Major issues with the anthrax vaccine include safety, conflicts of interest and the lobbying power of the drug developer. I don?t have all the answers, but will outline some of the concerns. Some of these are voiced by ardent vaccine opponents, such as NVIC; others sound more akin to ?conspiracy theorists.? A list of safety concerns is presented by two ex-officers in the National Guard. Counterarguments as to safety issues are given by the Institute of Medicine and were outlined in the first part of this series.

Earlier, Steve Salzberg pointed out the conflicts of interest with advisory committee members who receive their funding from government biodefense contracts. But let?s look at the sole manufacturer of the country?s vaccine.

The anthrax vaccine was initially developed by the state of Michigan?s Biologic Products Institute (MBPI). In 1998, the MBPI plant was closed for ?renovations? coincidentally following an FDA ?notice of intent to revoke licenses?. MBPI was sold in 1998 to for-profit BioPort corporation, which became a subsidiary of Emergent BioSolutions. According to the Department of Defense?s anthrax vaccination website, Emergent is headed by Fuad El-Hibri and Admiral William Crowe, Jr., a former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (appointed by President Reagan) and the U.S. ambassador to Britain (1994-1997, appointed by President Clinton). El-Hibri was ?CEO of the British company Porton International, which had made a fortune selling anthrax vaccine to countries like Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War.? El-Hibri was not a U.S. citizen at the time and there was reluctance in some quarters to have the government?s sole anthrax vaccine supply controlled by foreign nationals. So Crowe was brought in as director in exchange for about 10% of the company?s stock.

The Corporate Research Project details the bailouts to BioPort to keep the company, the sole manufacturer of anthrax vaccine, viable following considerable regulatory and financial problems.

?BioPort had originally been awarded a $29.4 million DoD contract to supply 8.7 million doses of anthrax vaccine at the price of $4.36 each. But in 1999, the company got a $24.1 million bailout from the DoD. This included an increase in the price per dose from $4.36 to $10.64 and a reduction in the number of doses by about 30 percent. The Pentagon also agreed to advance BioPort $18.7 million to help it cover its debts. The new agreement increased the cost of the contract for the Pentagon to $49.8 million over the following five years. The government has reportedly spent more than $120 million of taxpayers? money to keep the company afloat.?

Reporter Bob Evans further details BioPort?s financial mismanagement, quoting Congressman Walter Jones, R-N.C., ?The message seems clear: If a company wants to make millions without providing a product or service, enter into a sole-source contract with the Department of Defense to produce vaccines?BioPort appears to have the government over a barrel.?

In addition to the financial subsidies, outlined above, concerns have been raised about irregularities in the manufacturing process. Reportedly, on the eve of the Gulf War, the Department of Defense ?accelerated and altered the vaccine?s manufacturing process, but without proper regulatory approvals.? ?The Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported that the manufacturer ?did not notify FDA of a number of changes made in the manufacturing process in the early 1990s and no specific studies were undertaken to confirm that vaccine quality was not affected.? GAO added that the ?ingredients used to make vaccine were changed from the original vaccine,? and that ?prior to the time of licensing, no human efficacy testing of the ? vaccine was performed.? A 2000 Congressional report stated, ?use of the current anthrax vaccine for force protection against biological warfare should be considered experimental and undertaken only pursuant to FDA regulations governing investigational testing for a new indication.?

After September 11, 2001, Bioport quickly got its license back, although the FDA had previously found a number of quality control issues in the manufacturing process.

Since then, Emergent BioSolutions has had a lucrative government monopoly and has been aggressive in protecting it. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Emergent spent more than $3.2 million on lobbying in 2011 alone.

There have also been public relations and ?educational? endeavors sponsored by Bioport, though not always advertised as such. The Partnership for Anthrax Vaccination Education, or P.A.V.E., had a website in support of the vaccine, operated by Muhiuddm Haider, a professor at George Washington University. One of PAVE?s regular speakers was Jerome Hauer, former assistant secretary of health and human services for emergency preparedness; there was no disclosure that he was being paid by BioPort.

Revolving Door Lobbying

However, in 2003, while still a government employee HHS, Hauer stated that a ?new vaccine was ?a better long-range option than investing in expanding manufacturing capacity? for BioThrax?? and that ?the scientific basis? for a genetically engineered vaccine was ?very sound and will result in an improved product.? Yet as soon as he left, and became a member of BioPort?s board, as well as a lobbyist for them, his assessment changed radically as he changed masters.

Other lobbyists included:

Washington Lobbyists

Louis Sullivan, secretary of health and human services under President George H.W. Bush

McKenna Long & Aldridge (MLA), which helped BioPort win a $122.7 million Project Bioshield contract. ?MLA had supplied several lawyers, including one who?d helped write the Homeland Security Act of 2002 and two who?d been tapped by Congress for help in creating the BioShield law.?

John Hishta, former executive director of the National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee and former campaign manager for Sen. John Warner (R-Va), influential in Pentagon politics.

A more complete list of lobbyists and spending levels are available from the terrific Center for Responsive Politics here and here. They have a handy list of former Congressmen and a wonderful ?revolving door profile.?

These lobbyists have not only helped Emergent BioSolutions secure these seemingly exorbitant government contracts, but have helped ensure that they maintain a monopoly. Their main rival was VaxGen, who had won an $877.5 million federal contract to develop a safer, genetically engineered vaccine. According to an Los Angeles Times investigation, ?Fear Inc.,? ?Emergent responded by mobilizing more than 50 lobbyists, including former aides to Vice President Dick Cheney, to make the case that relying on the new vaccine was a gamble and that the nation?s safety depended on buying more of Emergent?s product. The company and its allies in Congress ridiculed VaxGen and impugned the competence or motives of officials who supported the new vaccine. The lobbying effort damaged VaxGen?s credibility with members of Congress and the Bush administration.?

Between 2004-2007, Emergent spent $5.29 million on its cadre of lobbyists, while VaxGen spent only $720,000 on six lobbyists. After VaxGen?s contract was cancelled, Emergent had the audacity to claim that their aggressive lobbying was in the country?s interest. Executive Robert G. Kramer admonished the House Government Oversight and Reform Committee, ?HHS has staked the nation?s protection against the No. 1 biologic threat on an experimental product.? He further threatened the committee that, should they fund VaxGen, Emergent would have to reconsider its decision to produce the vaccine.

Adding insult to mortal injury, in 2008, Emergent purchased Vaxgen?s recombinant anthrax vaccine technology for a bargain $2 million, given that ?more than $250 million was spent to develop it.? And now Emergent has lucrative government contracts for a vaccine with the recombinant protein antigen and a third generation vaccine.

PharmAthene is another Emergent rival and has also had a rocky road, with it?s hopes for a 2008 contract dashed when Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) cancelled plans; and Emergent again vastly outspent its rival on lobbying.

Emergent had another reason to aggressively protect its contract. According to the Center for American Progress? must read report, Getting Rich on Uncle Sucker, Emergent?s cost of production in 2009 was $46 million and profit $217 million?a markup of about 300%.

Also, since the vaccine only has a four year shelf life, Emergent is guaranteed a steady income stream?on the order of $100 million/year?just to replenish the stock.

While Emergent won a grant worth up to $1.25 billion in late 2011?and which was a sole-source contract?its future monopoly is not entirely guaranteed. BARDA is supporting development of next generation recombinant protein antigen (rPA)-based vaccines that will require fewer doses and hopefully have less side effects.

In 2004, President Bush signed Project Bioshield, which earmarked $5.6 billion for new drugs and vaccines to counter bioterrorism. At this point, we seem to have a multi-billion dollar vaccine which has never been shown to be efficacious against inhalational anthrax and was adopted by circumventing usual FDA procedures and despite numerous manufacturing quality issues and safety issues.

And that brings us to the proposed plan for testing the anthrax vaccine in children?Coming up next.

Addictions Specialists Prescribing Medication For Addicts

?

Article Directory :: Self-Improvement/Motivation Articles

Drug rehabilitation centers and programs are not enough for a patient who is suffering from deep addiction. These patients require the help of an addictions specialist to help them with the medication they will be taking throughout the rehabilitation program and even after they are discharged from the recovery center. Such specialists are highly recommended not only by recovery centers and rehabilitation programs but also by psychologists that recommend their patients with specific medications to cure them of their mental instability and or addiction.

An Addictions Specialist is knowledgeable not only in what kind of medication is to be given to certain patients or addicts but they also have a psychiatric degree. They provide their patients with the counseling and the therapy that they need in order for them to successfully undergo the treatment that they require to cure them of their addictions and or mental instability. After they have evaluated or assessed their patients condition or addiction that's when they'll prescribe them with the medication they need in order to steer away their urges that causes them to return to their addicted state of mind. New patients who are undergoing withdrawal symptoms are given treatment to help them during their withdrawal stage. These types of medications and method treatments are used to help a patient fully detoxify from the substances they have been addicted to. Flushing out the impurities helps ensure that their body will no longer yearn for such addictive illegal substances. The other method left after that is counseling; this helps them admit and talk about the issues and or dilemmas they've undergone that made them result to alcohol addiction or substance abuse where they would find a momentary escape from the issues and problems that they are facing every single day.

Such certified addiction specialist use treatment methods that would last several months to a year to fully ensure that the patients they have are fully cured of the addiction they once had. After discharging a patient from their care they still prescribe them with psychoactive medication to ensure that they have no relapse or that they will not have the urge to get back to their addiction once they experience certain psychological breakdowns. Should they feel the urge or have a craving to get back to their addiction these specialists would always advice them to come back and resume their counseling or therapy.

Junior dos Santos wins, transforms from power puncher to happiest man on the planet

Junior dos Santos defended the UFC belt at UFC 146. In the second round, the barrage of dos Santos' punches were too much for Frank Mir. Referee Herb Dean stopped the fight, and a smile took over dos Santos face.

When UFC commentator Joe Rogan asked JDS how he was feeling, the jubilant heavyweight yelled into the microphone.

"I'm feeling awesome, man!"

He smiled his way through the interview then talked about the young kids he works with in Brazil. He brought one of them with him to the fight. After hoisting the shy boy on his shoulders, JDS kept him there while posing for post-fight pictures.

[Kevin Iole: Junior dos Santos rocks Frank Mir at UFC 146]

In that 15-minute span, dos Santos showed what is so likable about the heavyweight champ. He can put on an exciting fight, hammering Mir so badly that his face was already swollen and bruised by the end of the first round. As soon as the bout was stopped, dos Santos' killer instinct subsided. He became the happy, smiling man who loved his job and wanted to share that joy with everyone he met.

How To Choose The Right iPhone 4S Plans

iPhone 4S plans

It was in October 2011 when the iPhone 4S was introduced to the world, and since then many have bought or shifted to the fifth generation of Apples iconic smartphone. In fact, the company has announced that they were able to sell four million units in the first three days of its release ? the most ever for a phone. There are several features on the iPhone 4S which contributed to its worldwide success and popularity. For example, the phone now features a voice recognition system known as Siri which could activate numerous other built-in apps, and the iCloud service. Many say that Siri is probably the most important feature on the iPhone 4S and one of the most novel applications Apple has ever produced.

The iPhone 4S is also faster thanks to its A5 dual-core processor. Its GPU is also 7x faster than those from its predecessors. These upgrades make it possible to use resource-intensive apps and games seamlessly. The iPhone 4S has an 8MP camera and enhanced illumination sensor making it possible to produce good quality web-ready photos. This smartphone can also take true HD videos.

The major flaw on the iPhone 4 was its antenna, and this is resolved and substantially improved in the iPhone 4S. The phones maximum HSDP data speeds can reach up to 14.4 Mbps which means faster connections, loading, reloading, and downloads. However, owning an iPhone 4S is not cheap. You would have to fork out a hundred dollars monthly for voice minutes, text and data plans. To make sure that you get to make the most out of your phone, you have to choose the right iPhone 4S plans for you.

There are a number of things you should take into account when selecting among different iPhone plans. Fortunately, many carriers make it possible to customize your plan to best fit your budget and preferences. In the US, Sprint would be the best choice for those with a lean budget. For about a hundred bucks each month, you already get to enjoy 900 minutes of voice calls, unlimited texting and data.

Apart from plan costs, you have to also consider network quality. AT&T is considered by many as the one with the best network quality among carriers that offer the iPhone 4S, largely because of its GSM network. A speed test done by PCWorld in 2011 showed that AT&T can offer download speeds of more than 1,400 kbps which closely matches the iPhone 4S theoretical maximum download speed. Just the same, it would be a good idea to know more about how others perceive the network quality of the carrier by reading reviews and inquiring from friends.

Keep Your Computer and Broadband Connection Safe ...

Use of computers is becoming prevalent since the early stage of its existence and these days, more and more people are relying most of their activities on this amazing technology. Getting a constant internet connection is becoming easier due to the availability of cheap broadband that almost everyone can afford. Your computer may seem to be working well at the moment but as long as you are connecting to the internet whether occasionally or almost all the time, getting harmful attacks is imminent. For this reason, you should always be equipped with the necessary programs and internet surfing practices to protect your internet connection and computer.

Be Sure That The Firewall Is In Place

Firewall may come as a software program or hardware. Most Windows operating systems comes with a free firewall so if your computer uses Windows as its operating system, you may no longer need to look further for a firewall.

Firewalls can do a god job in blocking suspicious information to prevent it from getting into your hard drive. Harmful things like spyware, adware, virus and worms can damage your computer but your firewall will always ?filter? all the information that comes from the internet to see if any of these are attempting to get into your computer?s system.

Even if your computer is pre-installed with a firewall, you should be certain that it is activated and adjusted to your specifications. The latest security patches, which will arrange any problems that will keep your firewall from doing its job, should also be installed. Another thing to remember about firewalls is that it should be able to receive updates automatically since malicious things like viruses evolve constantly and for this reason, your firewall should always be able to keep up.

Install A Reliable Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware Program

A firewall will indeed be helpful in preventing harmful attacks but a reliable anti-virus will still be necessary in order for your computer to be more secured. You will never know how bad those harmful attacks can be and having only one level of protection with your firewall may never be enough. There are several reliable anti-virus software that can protect your computer from spyware and harmful items. And if your computer is already attacked by a virus, installing an anti-virus software as soon as possible can remove it before it causes any irreversible damage.

If you will search the internet, you will find several anti-virus programs that you can download for free. It may be able to protect your computer to a certain extent or until a short period of time but you can always get a better protection from those that are being offered for a certain fee.

Always Be Sure That Your Wireless Internet Connection Is Secure

Our internet technology has indeed, evolved to a great extent enabling internet connections even without cables through wireless internet. However, the downside to this is, hackers who are only nearby can get through your personal information most especially if your internet connection is not secured. Be sure that your router has a password that is difficult to speculate. Also, give your network a service set identifier or SSID that is very unique. Be sure also that the SSID broadcast is turned off so people who are nearby will not be able to find your network with their wireless gadget. Another thing that you should consider is the encryption which encodes the information in your network. If the information is in some type of a code form, it will not be easy for hackers to decipher. Check your settings to see if the encryption is on.

In these modern times, computer and internet technology keeps on evolving and harmful attacks are keeping up as well. Whether you are getting your internet connection with cheap broadband or with expensive internet plans, you should always take steps in having a secure connection. But by keeping these tips in mind, you will be certain that your computer and internet connection will be working properly without any viruses and other harmful items.

D-backs end?Dodgers' 6-game win streak

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:40 a.m. ET May 24, 2012

PHOENIX (AP) - One night after letting a five-run lead slip away, Joe Saunders and the Arizona Diamondbacks weren't going to fall victim to another comeback.

Justin Upton and Ryan Roberts homered and every Arizona starter had at least one hit as the Diamondbacks beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-4 on Wednesday night, ending the NL West leaders' six-game winning streak.

"It makes the beer taste better, for sure," said Saunders, whose broken-bat single was among the Diamondbacks' 14 hits against five Dodgers pitchers. "We would have liked to get two, but to salvage one game out of the series was nice."

Willie Bloomquist had three hits, including an RBI triple, and Aaron Hill added three hits and two RBIs as the Diamondbacks won for only the second time in their last 11 home games and snapped a four-game losing streak overall.

"There wasn't a lot we could do about yesterday," Bloomquist said. "The way we bounced back and got some runs early was impressive. Last night stung a little bit but you've got to bounce back. There's always a game tomorrow."

Saunders (3-3) struck out a season-high seven and scattered seven hits across 6 1-3 innings.

"We needed for him to go deep in the game," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "Our bullpen needed the rest."

Ted Lilly (5-1) went 3 1-3 innings, his shortest outing since September 16, 2010, at San Francisco. He gave up eight runs on nine hits and five walks.

"It was definitely a combination of extremely poor pitching on my part and good hitting," Lilly said. "It seemed like the very few occasions when I did throw a decent pitch, they got the barrel on those, too."

A.J. Ellis hit a solo homer in the fourth for the Dodgers, who only have swept Arizona at Chase Field once in the Diamondbacks' 14-plus-season existence.

Arizona, which entered the game averaging 3.5 runs per game in its past 17 home games, scored in each of the first four innings against Lilly.

Roberts gave the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead two batters into the bottom of the first, hitting his third home run just over the left-field wall. Hill added a two-out RBI single for a 2-0 lead.

The Diamondbacks made it 4-0 in the second when Bloomquist tripled home Henry Blanco, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Roberts.

Gerardo Parra had an RBI single in the third, Jason Kubel hit a two-run triple in the fourth and Hill added his second run-scoring single of the game, also in the fourth, to put the Diamondbacks ahead 8-0 and chase Lilly.

Roberts recorded his third RBI on a grounder in the fifth, just ahead of Upton's opposite-field home run that extended Arizona's lead to 11-1.

"I guess I only hit the ball the other way now," Upton said. "Anytime you can square a ball up makes you feel better about your approach."

Los Angeles pieced together two hits and three walks to score three runs in the seventh against Saunders.

NOTES: Dodgers 3B Justin Sellers was a late scratch with numbness in his right leg and replaced by Adam Kennedy. Sellers will undergo an MRI exam on Thursday. ... The Diamondbacks' multirun first inning was their first since April 28, a span of 23 games. ... Bloomquist is riding an eight-game winning streak, with six multihit games in his past seven. ... Dodgers RF Andre Ethier was given his first day off after appearing in Los Angeles' first 43 games. ... Arizona RHP Daniel Hudson, out since April 21 with a right shoulder impingement, is on track to start Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers. ... After an off-day on Thursday, RHP Ian Kennedy will take the mound for the Diamondbacks against Yovani Gallardo and the Brewers. Kennedy is 0-4 with a 5.92 ERA in his past four starts after posting a 9-0 mark in his previous 12 dating back to last season. ... NL Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw will face Houston RHP Lucas Harrell on Friday at Dodger Stadium. Kershaw is coming off his fourth career shutout on Saturday against St. Louis.
