Western Kentucky head coach Willie Taggart will be named the new head football coach at South Florida, sources told ESPN.com.
Neither school has made an official announcement regarding the hire.
Taggart has ties to Florida as a native of the state and a graduate of Manatee High School in Bradenton.
Taggart has a 16-20 record in three seasons at Western Kentucky, his alma mater. This season, he guided the Hilltoppers to the Little Caesars Bowl, the school?s first bowl appearance since joining the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2008.
Taggart took over at Western Kentucky when Jack Harbaugh retired.
Before returning to WKU, the 36-year-old Taggart spent three seasons as Stanford's running backs coach under Jim Harbaugh, Jack's son, who had helped to recruit Taggart to WKU. While Taggart was at Stanford from 2007 to 2009, he coached Heisman Trophy finalist Toby Gerhart.
Gerhart said Taggart and Jim Harbaugh possess many similar coaching qualities.
"I see a lot of similarities between Coach Harbaugh and him," Gerhart said, according to TampaBay.com. "They have similar philosophies when it comes to being relentless, being tough, running the ball. He takes such great pride in running the ball, and that's kind of gone by the wayside in college football."
Skip Holtz was fired on Sunday after three seasons with USF.
Tampa radio station WDAE was first to report the hiring of Taggart.
