BII REPORT: The Future of Mobile Advertising - Business Insider

mobile ad forecastSmartphones are rapidly becoming the most common device connected to the Internet.?For the first time ever last year, smartphone sales passed PC sales.

Now, everyone's attention is turning towards the future of mobile advertising.

BI Intelligence?has produced a comprehensive presentation on mobile advertising,?looking closely at the growth of smartphones and tablets, mobile usage trends, and emerging mobile advertising strategies.

Here's a quick breakdown of the dynamics surrounding mobile advertising:?

  • Mobile usage has -- and will continue to -- grow exponentially: Smartphone sales have overtaken PC sales, and will soon dawrf them.?There are over one billion smartphones in use, and it's still early in the conversation cycle (with six billion dumbphones in use).?Time spent on mobile is growing rapidly, accounting for more than 10% of total web traffic, and more than 50% of Pandora and Twitter use.?
  • The mobile ad market is still relatively small: Last year, the total U.S. mobile ad spend was approximately $1.25 billion, a tiny fraction of overall U.S. ad spend.?And most "mobile ads" were simply search and display ads viewed on mobile.?
  • Why? Mobile CPMS are low, and ads are oftentimes intrusive. Ad spending has therefore not caught up with time spent on mobile.?These will remain significant challenges to mobile ads.
  • But, native ad formats are emerging and we are seeing growth: The future of the Internet is mobile,?and new ad formats are being designed and tested. So far,?sponsored stories have proven most effective for the advertiser and least intrusive to the user. Facebook created a mobile sponsored story business with a run rate of $180 million in almost no time.

The presentation is full of charts and data that can be easily downloaded, and put to use.

Charges expected for Colorado shooting suspect

The booking photo of James Holmes (Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office)

[Updated at 12:30 p.m. ET]

Prosecutors on Monday charged James Holmes with two dozen counts of first-degree murder and slew of other violent offenses related to the recent deadly rampage at a Colorado movie theater.

Holmes, who appeared in court with the same cartoonish orange-red hair he at the time of the shooting, said only one word during Monday's hearing.

"Yes," he answered when asked by the judge if he agreed to waive his right to a preliminary hearing in the next 35 days.

The district attorney near Denver has not announced if she will seek the death penalty against the alleged gunman.

Police say Holmes, 24, blasted his way through a packed movie house during a premiere showing of Batman "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora.

Twelve victims died in the attack, 58 others were wounded. The melee is among the worst mass shootings in modern-day American history.

Holmes was clad in tactical gear and possessed four guns and a stockpile of ammo when he surrendered to officers behind the cinema shortly after the July 20th shooting spree. He did not resist arrest, but investigators have since described the former neuroscience doctoral student as uncooperative.

[RELATED: Suspect's former neighbors moving]

Police say Holmes legally purchased the guns in May and June, but allegedly began stockpiling ammo and other gear four months ago.

"This is not a whodunit. ... The only possible defense is insanity," Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver, told the Associated Press.

At Monday's hearing, attorneys are also expected to argue a defense motion to find out who leaked information to the news media about a package the former grad student allegedly sent to his psychiatrist at the University of Colorado Denver.

Authorities seized the package July 23, three days after the shooting, after finding it in the mail room of the medical campus where Holmes studied. Several media outlets reported that it contained a notebook with descriptions of an attack, but Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers said in court papers that the parcel hadn't been opened by the time the "inaccurate" news reports appeared.

On Friday, court papers revealed that Holmes was seeing a psychiatrist at the university. But they did not say how long he was seeing Dr. Lynne Fenton and if it was for a mental illness or another problem.

The University of Colorado's website identified Fenton as the medical director of the school's Student Mental Health Services. An online resume listed schizophrenia as one of her research interests and stated that she sees 10 to 15 graduate students a week for medication and psychotherapy, as well as 5 to 10 patients in her general practice as a psychiatrist, the Associated Press reported.

Under Colorado law, defendants are not legally liable for their acts if their minds are so "diseased" that they cannot distinguish between right and wrong. However, the law warns that "care should be taken not to confuse such mental disease or defect with moral obliquity, mental depravity, or passion growing out of anger, revenge, hatred, or other motives, and kindred evil conditions."

[RELATED: Should the movie theater reopen?]

Experts say there are two levels of insanity defenses. Holmes' public defenders could argue he is not mentally competent to stand trial, like Jared Loughner, who killed six people when he shot Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in 2011. Loughner has pleaded not guilty to charges in the shooting. He has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and is undergoing treatment at a Missouri prison facility in a bid to make him mentally fit to stand trial.

If Holmes' attorneys cannot convince the court that he is mentally incompetent, and he is convicted, they can try to stave off a possible death penalty by arguing he is mentally ill.

Sam Kamin, a law professor at the University of Denver, said there is "pronounced" evidence that the attack was premeditated, which would seem to make an insanity defense difficult. "But," he told the Associated Press, "the things that we don't know are what this case is going to hinge on, and that's his mental state."

(The Associated Press and Yahoo! staffer Tim Skillern in Centennial, Colo., contributed to this report.)

TORONTO, July 26, 2012 /CNW/ - Close to 400 bicycle riders and crew will begin a 600 kilometre journey from Toronto to Montreal in the 14th Annual Friends For Life Bike Rally, presented by Scotiabank, on Sunday, July 29, 2012. Departing at 9 a.m. from Queen?s Park in Toronto, the 2012 Friends For Life Bike Rally is raising money for Toronto People With AIDS Foundation (PWA).

The services provided by PWA are essential to many people in Toronto. People who are HIV positive are living longer, but can have greater challenges. PWA?s core services like food programs, treatment resources and financial assistance for men, transmen, transwomen, women and children living with HIV/AIDS in our community are more important than ever.

Glen Murray, MPP Toronto Centre, has joined the Bike Rally for the first time this year. ?It was 10 years and 50 pounds ago that I last undertook a long distance fundraising ride. I share the nervousness of other first time riders but I am confident because with each passing day of training, the seat seems more comfortable and the distance a little shorter,? said Mr. Murray. ?When Premier McGuinty appointed me Minister of Training, Colleges & Universities, I never imagined this was the training he had in mind. I also never realized how inspired I would be by the courage of people living with AIDS.?

Noting the need to continue to support people living with HIV/AIDS, Mr. Murray said, ?This disease hasn?t gone away and neither has the stigma associated with it. PWA?s support ranging from the basics of life?to the emotional and social support for people dealing with HIV/AIDS is unparalleled and funding is essential to keep the organization running. Knowing this makes it easy to get on my bike for six days and ask people to donate.?

Through its Bright Future community giving program, Scotiabank is proud to be on board for the fifth year as presenting sponsor of the Friends For Life Bike Rally and so doing, support the important work of PWA. The event has contributed more than $10 million in the past 13 years to support people living with HIV/AIDS in Toronto. The Bike Rally is a grassroots, volunteer-driven fundraiser that began in 1999 when two friends challenged each other to cycle from Toronto to Montreal to support PWA.

Did a ?Follow Friday? list reveal the name of Mitt Romney?s VP choice?

The head of Romney's search for a running mate thinks you should follow a small, select group of Republicans this??

With the 2012 Olympic Games now officially underway in England, it can be easy to forget that 2012 is also notable for being a presidential election year... at least for the next few weeks. Well, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney doesn't want you to stop thinking about the close November election. That's why Beth Myers, the person named to head up his search for a vice presidential nominee, took to social network Twitter today to suggest you follow a small group of Republican conservatives, one of whom is likely to be named as Romney's VP pick in a few weeks' time.

Myers has only tweeted a total of three times, and two of them were shared above. That is leading a number of political observers to interpret Myers' tweets as the Romney campaign's vice presidential short list ? the big political names still under consideration for joining Mitt Romney on the November ballot. By announcing the full list, it appears that Romney is trying to avoid the kind of national shock that arose in 2008 when Sen. John McCain picked a largely unknown Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin from out of nowhere to be his running mate.

The names in each of the tweets are somewhat familiar to those who follow politics. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan have frequently been named as a possible Romney picks, as have the relatively young Florida Senator Marco Rubio and bombastic New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. There are a number of female names in consideration too: New Mexico Gov. Susan Martinez, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte.

Top airports for spreading germs IDed

Major hubs with far-flung flights are most efficient

Web edition : 4:34 pm

An infectious disease that really wants to go global would do well boarding planes at JFK or LAX, according to a new computer simulation that ranks U.S. airports by their potential to kick-start an epidemic.?

The simulation could help public health officials decide how and where to allocate resources such as vaccinations in the early days of an outbreak, says Ruben Juanes of MIT, who describes the analysis online July 19 in PLOS ONE.

Many simulations of how epidemics spread focus on the final outcome, such as how many people would ultimately be infected. This new work is mostly concerned with how the location of an initial outbreak affects the subsequent pandemic, says complex systems scientist Dirk Brockmann of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

Surprisingly, the total number of passengers moving through an airport isn?t the deciding factor. By that measure, Atlanta?s airport ? the busiest in the country ? would be ideal for spreading germs. What?s key is how connected the airport is to other well-connected airports.

?You are a good spreader if your neighbors are good spreaders,? Juanes says. ?That?s what?s really essential.?

Once an epidemic is well under way, other factors such as how the germ moves from one person to another seem to be most important, he says.

Juanes and his colleagues used air travel data on all flights originating or landing in the U.S. from January 2007 to July 2010 to construct an air transportation network made up of 1,833 airports and roughly 50,000 connections. The researchers also extracted airport waiting times from passenger itineraries. Then they developed a computer program that incorporated information on people?s travel patterns and how infectious diseases move from person to person.

The program ranks 40 major U.S. airports for how influential they are at spreading a disease originating in their home city. That New York City?s John F. Kennedy International Airport came in first and Los Angeles International was second isn?t so surprising. But third on the list is Honolulu International, which is only the 25th busiest airport in the country. Yet Honolulu is supremely positioned for sending sick people to myriad far-flung destinations. The airport is well-connected to massive hubs, it sends and receives travelers from both East and West, and its flight schedule is dominated by long-range routes. ?

Atlanta?s airport, on the other hand, ranked eighth. While it?s very busy in terms of number of passengers, most of the travel to and from Atlanta is regional. The flights in and out are on the shorter side and are to places that aren?t well connected, notes Juanes.

For passengers in the Washington, D.C., area, traveling via Dulles really helps germs out; it ranked seventh most influential. Baltimore?s airport ranked 23rd and Reagan National 30th.

PAU'S HONOR

When Spain walks into Olympic stadium on Friday night for the opening ceremomy, they'll be led by Pau Gasol. The basketball star has been designated the nation's flag bearer, one of the highest honors an Olympic athlete can get.

"It's an amazing honor," Gasol said. "I feel very lucky and privileged to be carrying the flag and leading all of our athletes into the stadium. It will be a very memorable moment in my career."

The Spanish basketball team is considered one of the few teams that could challenge the mighty Americans for the gold medal. Despite a 100-78 exhibition loss to the United States earlier this week, Gasol's hopes remain high.

"Argentina, Russia, France and the USA are obviously the toughest teams," Gasol said. "But that has to proven during the tournament."

GOT TIX?

AP's Jenna Fryer, out and about in London, reports in:

I want to buy tickets to the gold medal game in men's beach volleyball. Maybe some for athletics, too. But I can't, and it's because I'm an American.

The final available tickets have been released, but you can only get them through the official website if you are a "resident of the UK or a designated European country." Since I don't meet that criteria, I've got to go through an authorized ticket reseller.

Slight problem: CoSport, the ATR for the United States, doesn't have tickets available for anything.

So, you've got a case of someone in London willing to part with an exorbitant amount of cash ? the only tickets left for the final day of track and field are going for 725 pounds (more than $1,000) ? but unable to open my wallet because of my nationality.

Meanwhile, the website SeatGeek has tracked more than 60 ticketing sites and found that the opening ceremony tickets have Super Bowl-like demand, and the average resale price is $2,550. If you are an American wanting to get in to Friday night's event, paying that price through eBay is likely your only option.

ROYAL CYCLE-LOVER

Queen Elizabeth II, like so many in Britain, has taken quite a shine to cycling.

Bradley Wiggins became the first Brit to win the Tour de France last weekend, and David Millar also won a stage during La Grande Boucle. Sprint specialist Mark Cavendish, the reigning road world champion, is among the favorites to win Saturday's race that begins and ends just outside of Buckingham Palace.

"I was at a reception at Buckingham Palace the other night and the IOC president was introducing her to certain people," UCI President Pat McQuaid said of the queen.

"He introduces her to me and said, 'Mr. McQuaid is a president of a very important federation and it's cycling," he said. "With that, her eyes lit up. She said, 'Oh, we're very successful in cycling now. We just won the Tour de France!' She was very aware of it."

FLAME LIGHTER?

The Olympics are finally here, and with Friday night's opening ceremony fast approaching, the speculation is mounting over who will earn the honor of lighting the Olympic flame.

Bookmakers have assigned odds on who will be the final torchbearer, so this is something you can actually bet on. The British Olympic Association said last week they've made their selection, so a handful of people already know the identity.

That's only heightened the debate, even between some of the contenders.

Sir Steve Redgrave is a five-time rowing gold medalist, but he's publicly questioned if two-time decathlon gold medalist Daley Thompson should get the nod over him. Thompson, meanwhile, has said he's more deserving than Sebastian Coe, two-time Olympic champion in the 1,500 meters and head of the London organizing committee.

And don't forget the celebrities or the royals.

Among the other names bandied about has been Prince William, David Beckham, Paul McCartney, or, maybe, an electronic device. In 1992, archer Antonio Rebollo opened the Games by shooting a flaming arrow toward the cauldron.

LONG RIDE

Thousands of visitors to London this week have made incredibly long trips to get here. Only one claims to have done it all on a rickshaw.

Farmer Chen Guanming is claiming that he made the entire journey from his home in Eastern China on his three-wheeled rickshaw. He says it took him two years to complete the ride, and he has photos of him in front of famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower to prove his case.

"I came. I did it. I'm very happy to have come to beautiful London," he said.

He made the trip without a ticket for the opening ceremony. He figures if he made it this far, he should be able to come up with a way to get into Olympic Stadium on Friday night.

FLYING SQUIRREL(S)

Watch your head for Flying Squirrels at the London Olympics. There's more than one of 'em.

U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler Ellis Coleman earned that nickname a few years ago because of his risky, signature move of the same name. Pint-sized gymnast Gabby Douglas earned the exact same moniker for the way she seems to fearlessly fly through the air on the uneven bars.

The two Flying Squirrels had a run-in Thursday ? sort of.

"Oh my God, I think he wanted a picture with us today. He's pretty big, right?," said Douglas, asked whether she had met Coleman. "Yeah, I think so."

Turns out the photo never happened, though. Squirrels are hard to catch.

"We had to catch a bus," Douglas said, "so we didn't have time."

VOLLEYBALL AND HORSE GUARDS

The beach volleyball venue is taking up some prime London real estate: Horse Guards Parade, which is basically in the prime minister's front yard and not far from Buckingham Palace and Parliament, too.

So, what are the Horse Guards doing while their usual home is covered with sand? They're running through their usual routine across the street.

In a lesser-known changing of the guard, a group of blue-coated riders, some of them with shiny armor vests, sit facing another set wearing red. After measuring each other up for a few minutes, one officer barks out commands, they sheath their swords and ride off single file.

A friendly bobby explained that the different colors represent different regiments.

MARCHING IN THE OPENING

Geno Auriemma says one of his fondest Olympic memories remains having the chance to march in the opening ceremony of the Sydney Games.

Far be it from him to deny his U.S. women's basketball team the opportunity.

Some athletes and teams who compete on the first full day of the Olympics traditionally tend to skip the opening ceremony the night before, simply because it's a late night and hours and hours of being on your feet during the entry parade.

But Auriemma's team will march, and he's perfectly fine with that choice.

"They all march. They will," Auriemma said. "No question, it's difficult. But you know, marching in the ceremony is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, maybe. And it's something everyone should get to experience."

CALL ME MAYBE

Missy Franklin's dancing skills are on full display in the U.S. swimming team's video set to the ubiquitous song "Call Me Maybe."

The 17-year-old teenager boogies down the aisle of a plane and whips her long hair around while lip-syncing to the Carly Rae Jepsen tune that has inspired countless viral videos.

Michael Phelps, wearing sunglasses, bobs his head from his airplane seat at the beginning.

Brendan Hansen grooves underwater, including some robot moves, and real-life couple Rebecca Soni and Ricky Berens move in for a kiss when a singing Dana Vollmer pops up between them. Ryan Lochte, with a towel wrapped around his upper body, smooches into the camera, a move sure to delight his female fans.

Matt Grevers shakes his booty, a dancing Anthony Ervin takes his hat off and jauntily tosses it at the camera, and Eric Shanteau does the sprinkler while going down a water slide at the team's pre-Olympic training camp in France. The video, which includes other U.S. swimmers, was posted Thursday on USA Swimming's web site.

Even Jon Urbanchek, a special coaching assistant, gets in on the act. He turns 76 this summer.

(AP) ? Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III generated excitement among the veterans at the opening of Redskins camp on Thursday.

Only six current players made the playoffs with Washington and only two have won a postseason game for the franchise. The team was just 11-21 during coach Mike Shanahan's first two seasons.

The 2011 Heisman Trophy winner landed in Washington in a trade that sent three first-round picks and a second-round selection to St. Louis. Shanahan named him the starter before the veterans reported in May, and the old-timers seem pleased to have the 22-year-old Griffin at the helm.

"There's definitely a different feeling about this team," said 37-year-old linebacker London Fletcher, who won a Super Bowl and two NFC titles with the Rams. "We know it's going to be a process. We're not going to expect (Robert) to be a top-five quarterback (right away).

"He has a lot of notoriety and deservedly so because of what he accomplished at Baylor. He doesn't carry himself like I'm a Heisman winner, they traded all these picks for me, I'm better than you guys. So it's easy for guys to gravitate towards him for his demeanor."

Two-time Pro Bowl tight end Chris Cooley couldn't be more impressed with Griffin, who invited his pass-catchers to spend a couple of days with him in Waco, Texas, during the six weeks between the end of spring workouts and the start of camp.

"No one treats him like a rookie," Cooley said. "You can't. He's the starter for us. You have to treat him like a starting quarterback. There's nothing that he does that says, 'We should haze you.' He's been a real professional since the day he walked through the door.

"I'm amazed every day by the way he handles it, his ability to run this offense. He's done a fantastic job. I can't imagine being suited more for the position he's in."

Running back Tim Hightower, part of a Super Bowl team in Arizona with quarterback Kurt Warner four years ago, likes what he sees from Griffin. But he doesn't want the rookie to feel compelled to try to singlehandedly turn around the Redskins.

"He has a lot of expectations on him," Hightower said. "As teammates, it's our responsibility to rise to the occasion, help his transition, take some of that focus, some of that pressure off him.

"We're going to go as he goes."

Griffin, who competed in the hurdles in 2008 Olympic trials, can certainly go on the field. As a senior at Baylor, Griffin led the Bears to an Alamo Bowl victory while passing for 4,293 yards and 37 touchdowns and running for 699 yards and 10 scores.

Fletcher compared Griffin to Philadelphia's dual threat quarterback Michael Vick. He said the rookie's speed will "shock" opposing defense especially when combined with his "rocket" arm.

"He can make every throw, use his legs to extend a play," Redskins three-time Pro Bowl cornerback DeAngelo Hall said. "You feel like, 'We got him,' and the play's still going on. He brings that dynamic to the game, and we hate that as defensive players.

"I guess it all starts at quarterback. That's what everybody always says. We finally got one that we feel like can hold his own against some of these other guys in the league. We got a chance to compete."

Notes: Starting right tackle Jammal Brown was absent from the morning walkthrough that preceded Thursday afternoon's first practice. . The Redskins cut rookie guard Nevin McCaskill (Hampton) and signed fullback Dorson Boyce, who was in camp with Seattle in 2011. They also re-signed rookie cornerback Chase Minniefield (knee) and placed him on the reserve/injured list.

PST: Will Gareth Bale draw FIFA's ire?

Nobody should be compelled to participate in the Olympics. I think we can all agree with this, right? I?ll confess, it?s a strange scenario ? a person having the talent to compete in the games but electing not to do so. But if somebody doesn?t want to do it, why make them? It sounds like a recipe for some pretty crappy performances.

Sepp Blatter doesn?t care about that, part of the reason he?s threatening to ban Gareth Bale from Tottenham?s preseason preparations. Bale was selected by Stuart Pearce for Team GB but pulled out with injury. Last night, Bale scored in Los Angeles against the Galaxy, a strangely high level of proficiency for somebody too hurt to participate in the Olympics. To Blatter, it looks like Bale?s shunning a callup to a FIFA-sanctioned event; hence, his ire. According to Blatter, if the English FA wants to make a big deal out of it (and formally complain), Bale could be banned.

Which is ridiculous. This isn?t Luka Modric ? a contracted player ? walking out of camp. This is voluntary, international duty. We want players to take that seriously, but that?s just because we like international soccer. Not-so-deep down, we know there?s no obligation, so when we get the rare Paul Scholes or Brad Friedel who says it?s not worth his time, we moan and move on. We don?t start thumbing through FIFA statutes looking for a cat o? nine tails to punish them.

Then there?s the whole Team GB issue. Wales isn?t playing in the Olympics. Team GB is, so you can excuse Bale if he doesn?t want to roll the dice on his season (and, if he really was slightly injured, World Cup qualifying for the actual Wales national team) for a team that doesn?t really exist ?

Outside this strange thing we call men?s Olympic soccer. Blatter threatening to ban Bale doesn?t make the thing any less surreal.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Marlins are trading stars, just like they did following their championships in 1997 and 2003. Team president David Samson says this exodus is different.

"A fire sale I guess comes after a World Series victory," he said Wednesday. "I don't know how you would call it a fire sale to trade players of team that's underperforming so spectacularly. So for us, we are just doing everything we can to win more games."

Former NL batting champion Hanley Ramirez became the latest player to leave, traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday with left-handed reliever Randy Choate for right-hander Nathan Eovaldi and minor league pitcher Scott McGough.

On Monday, the Marlins sent pitcher Anibal Sanchez and infielder Omar Infante to the Detroit Tigers for pitching prospect Jacob Turner and two minor leaguers.

"When we put the team together, none of us had any idea that we would be underperforming en masse," Samson said during a telephone interview. "It's not just one player. It is all players. So one of the hardest things to do is look in the mirror and say that we didn't get it right, and that's what we did. We want to restructure because we want to win games."

As the team prepared to move into its new $634 million retractable-roof ballpark, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria hired Ozzie Guillen as manager last fall and committed $191 million in a five-day span during the offseason to sign All-Stars Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Heath Bell. The team agreed to star in a Showtime reality series, "The Franchise."

In their colorful new uniforms, the Marlins were 31-23 through June 3, just percentage points out of first place, then lost 17 of their next 20 games. They are 45-53, 13? games out of first place and just a half-game above last.

Samson said president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest approached Loria and Samson after the Marlins lost two of three at the even-worse Chicago Cubs last week.

"He didn't feel as though things were trending properly for us to keep the team as is and make the playoffs," Samson said.

Miami might not be done, with pitcher Josh Johnson and Bell also trade possibilities before Tuesday's deadline to make swaps without waivers.

"Be careful with what you think, what you say, and how you smile because you might be next," Guillen said. "That's the way it has to go if you don't perform. That's business."

After winning the 1997 World Series, the Marlins jettisoned high-priced stars Moises Alou, Kevin Brown, Al Leiter, Robb Nen, Jeff Conine and Devon White. They won the Series again in 2003, then allowed Ivan Rodriguez, Ugueth Urbina, Derrek Lee, Mark Redman, Braden Looper and Juan Encarnacion to depart.

The 28-year-old Ramirez was hitting .246 with 14 home runs and 47 RBIs, far from his big season in 2009 when he hit a league-leading .342 with 24 homers and 106 RBIs.

"I am sad to go," Ramirez said. "This will be always be my home, but it will just be a little different."

A three-time All-Star, he shifted from shortstop to third base this season to make room for Reyes.

"It's sad to see Hanley go to another team," Reyes said. "We developed a great relationship. I feel he was one of my real good friends on the team."

Los Angeles began Wednesday night two games behind NL West-leading San Francisco. The Dodgers followed a 32-15 start by losing 30 of their next 51.

"You never know what a change of scenery will do for somebody," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said. "We see him as one of our main guys."

After filing for bankruptcy in 2011, the Dodgers were bought from Frank McCourt for $2 billion on May 1 in a move that led to Stan Kasten becoming team president.

Ramirez has a $15 million salary this year and is owed $15.5 million next year and $16 million in 2013.

"We're not going to let money stand in the way of a true baseball deal. And if we can improve the club, the financial piece of it will always be there," Colletti said. "It's kind of a liberating thing because we're able to make a baseball trade. We found a player that we really like, that we think can add to our lineup and at the same time show the guys who have been busting their tail for the last three months that we acknowledge how hard they've played and to get them the support that we can. It's good to not have to worry too much about what it's going to cost you from a financial standpoint. This (ownership) group is in to win."

Ramirez started at third base on Wednesday night but will shift to his old position as soon as he is comfortable. Dee Gordon is on the disabled list with a torn ligament in his right thumb that could sideline him until mid-August and is batting only .229 with 17 RBIs.

"I look at it as he has a clean slate," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Anything that's happened in his past has nothing to do with me, has nothing to do with the Dodgers. It's basically moving forward."

Choate, a 36-year-old lefty, is 0-0 with one save and a 2.49 ERA in 44 games. Eovaldi, a 22-year-old righty, is 1-6 with a 4.15 ERA. He is to make his Marlins debut on Saturday against San Diego.

In addition to saving the money owed Ramirez, the Marlins cut Sanchez's $8 million salary.

"The message to our fans is we signed so many players and had such a big payroll not for any other reason than to win games," Samson said, "and it wasn't happening enough."

Aussie chief urges team to focus amid racism row

The head of Australia's team at the London Olympics has urged his athletes to maintain their focus and not become sidetracked by the racism row involving John Steffensen.

The 400 metre runner has claimed he was racially abused by an Australia Olympic Committee staff member in Beijing four years ago, an allegation supported by Australia athletics team captain and reigning Olympic pole vault champion Steve Hooker.

"I won't single John out," Australia's chef de mission Nick Green said Tuesday. "For athletes this week, they need to focus and be ready to compete. Their focus needs to be on the competition.

"Any other distraction can have adverse affects on their performance. Athletes need to focus, but saying that, I have an open-door policy to all athletes, and if an athlete wants to talk to me about a matter they've got an issue with then, absolutely, come and see me.

"It happened in 2008. I'm looking after the team of 2012.

"I'm aware of it, like we all are. But I'm not giving more attention to it, no," Green insisted.

Earlier this month Steffensen, who has had several run-ins with Australia athletics chiefs, was overlooked for an individual 400m spot that went instead to Sydney teenager Steve Solomon.

Afterwards, Steffensen told Australia's Channel Nine: "I've put up with being racially vilified by this federation, being discriminated against on many teams.

"You know it'd help if I was a different colour, then a lot of decisions with my federation would be totally different, but I've never brought that up, I've always kept quiet on that."

Steffensen, however, has been selected as a member of Australia 4x400m relay squad.

Meanwhile, Green stressed Steffensen was not 'destabilising' the team.

"From a larger team point of view, no he's not. Having spoken to the team itself, the athletics team, he is a member of the team.

"We know he's a character, he's allowed to be a character and he's allowed to voice his opinion.

"The matter of him as a member of the team, that hasn't changed, some allegation he's made in 2008 and Athletics Australia will deal with those."

Asked if he would intervene in the Steffensen situation, Green replied: "When it becomes out of control."

Previously, Hooker supported Steffensen's claims by saying: "The staff member that was involved in that incident in Beijing isn't on this team.

"So as far as this team goes I don't believe John has any issues with anyone on this team."

He too urged Steffensen to put the issue on the back-burner, at least for the duration of the Games.

"That is stuff from the past and unfortunately John is still carrying that around with him and still has an issue with it," Hooker said.

"But we all hope as a team and we hope for John that we can get past that for the sake of this next two weeks and if there is stuff that still needs to be resolved at a later date then it can happen then."

Avoid Headaches Down the Road With Your Internet Security | Web ...

internet security

A working model of an initial setup of a company conducting business in the internet is a fast and consistent internet link and an organized computer network. For this company, a sizable investment is not a requirement. Just like any real world business, you need to identify your product and sell it effectively on the internet.

Let?s say you have done that. You already have a business plan. You are implementing marketing techniques and sales of your product has been picking up. You hope that everything should be fine since you are a small firm having small fixed cost. You may have chosen to give less priority to the security of your small computer network.

It is a mistake. Thinking that your company is small exempts it from the hazards of being connected to the internet is wrong. You are risking too much to have a small operating cost. It may end up into your company losing data and business hours. The web is home to a network of hackers, and malicious individuals. For fun or profit, they hijack control and data from different companies whether small or large. Some famous internet disruptions will include the ?I love you? email virus and the My Doom worm. A virus infects other files. A worm destroys network operating systems.

Data gathered by Internet Security groups seems to suggest that half of all small and medium sized businesses on the internet have failed to adopt security measures for their computer networks. Moreover, the number of breached and abused business networks is still very high. One such research company is AMI-Partners. It conducted a survey to verify how security conscious business companies on the web.

The Internet Security Alliance, ISA, a non-profit group that focuses on information security problems has found out that even small online businesses are more susceptible electronic interference and data pilferage. Some of the bad elements on the internet can even monitor communication whether email or voice over the net methods.

Common sense dictates that it is a waste of time and capital assets if your computer is left unsecured against these threats. Your business will fail if your reputation is damaged by your failure to safeguard data from your customers as well as your company resources.

A solution to these problems is found by surfing the internet. You should get all the information on internet security and the products that provide for it. There are several reputable and reliable companies. They have been providing excellent internet security products for years. Don?t you think that it is about time that you minimize the risks of losing your reputation and resources to these bad elements?

To understand childhood obesity, researchers look to inactive, fat rats

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? Childhood obesity has nearly tripled in the past three decades, and by 2009, 17 percent of those 2-19 years of age were classified as obese. If actions against childhood obesity do not take place it is likely that today's children could be the first generation in over a century to experience a decline in life expectancy due to the epidemic of childhood obesity which leads to complications in later life. While little is known about how inactivity and obesity lead to undesirable side effects such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers, scientists at the University of Missouri in Columbia have reviewed dozens of studies that look at childhood obesity using new animal models. The scientists suggest that the models could be key to better understanding the condition and its complex relationship to certain diseases.

The article appears in the online edition of the American Journal of Physiology -- Regulatory, Integrative, and Comparative Physiology, published by the American Physiological Society.

Using Inactive, Fat Rats to Study Juvenile Obesity

Lead author Dr. Michael Roberts and his colleagues have written a review article outlining previous research, including some of their own studies, on various animal models that simulate childhood obesity through inactivity. The researchers concentrate specifically on a particular example, called the rodent wheel lock model, to study how different organ systems of young rats respond to a cessation of daily physical activity. This model houses rats in cages with running wheels starting at 28 days of age, which the animals voluntarily use for the next three to six weeks. After that period, the wheels are locked, preventing their primary source of physical activity.

Results

The researchers assert that findings from a variety of studies of juvenile obesity in humans show that children who are inactive in childhood are significantly more likely than those who engaged in exercise when young to continue this habit into adulthood. Additionally, they say, this inactivity in childhood initiates the mechanisms that lead to the consequences of obesity seen in adults. Using the wheel lock model and other animal models for studying childhood obesity is giving scientists more insight on exactly what happens when activity is restricted during youth, leading to obesity.

For example, studies have shown that young, inactive rats have reduced insulin sensitivity (a precursor to type-2 diabetes), eat more and burn off fewer calories, and develop larger fat pads than animals who continue to exercise. Other studies show that fat cells multiply to a significantly greater extent in rats who aren't allowed to run on their wheels, while others show that such voluntary exercise in parents can stem positive transgenerational effects in offspring that are bred to be genetically predisposed to obesity (for instance, reduced body fat). Additionally, the wheel lock and other animal model suggest that exercise during youth may help preserve muscle mass over the course of aging and lower the activity of genes associated with cardiovascular disease.

Importance of the Findings

The authors suggest that the wheel lock model and other models that allow exercise, then block it later, are akin to modern-day living conditions in which children who are active during the summer become increasingly sedentary when the school year starts. For these children, voluntary exercise abruptly ends when they must ride in motorized vehicles to school, sit in classrooms, and have insufficient recess or physical education classes. By studying these conditions in rats and other animals, Roberts and his colleagues say, researchers can avoid the ethical conundrum involved in forcing active children to refrain from exercise, imposing biopsies and other tissue sampling techniques, or other parts of research that are possible in animals but not in humans. However, the authors note that animal research still has a long way to go.

They suggest that future studies incorporating animal models of childhood obesity take place over longer periods to determine how inactivity during youth contributes to adult consequences of obesity and whether interventions, such as reintroducing exercise, can affect this trajectory. They also note that future studies should examine whether restricting exercise during childhood could affect future motivation to exercise in adulthood, something preliminary work in their lab and others' has suggested.

"Continuing to examine the effects of inactivity on physiological homeostasis during youth is crucial given that 58 percent of children between the ages of 6-11 fail to obtain the recommended 60 minutes per day of physical activity and 92 percent of adolescents fail to achieve this goal," the authors say. "Importantly we contend that using juvenile rodent inactivity models will continue to provide a powerful clinical translational tool that can be used for primordial prevention of human childhood obesity."
